Two Hundred Years on the Erie Canal, 1817-2017

The library is currently hosting a traveling exhibit on the history of the Erie Canal, from now until December 22, 2017.  The exhibit is located in the Browsing Lounge, on the main floor near the entrance of the library.

The exhibit, titled "Two Hundred Years on the Erie Canal, 1817-2017" celebrates the 200th anniversary of the groundbreaking of the Erie Canal.

The archival images in the exhibit come from the New York Heritage Digital Collections and the Digital Public Library of America.  The exhibit itself comes from the Rochester Regional Library Council and has been traveling to different libraries across the state throughout this year.

We have supplemented the exhibit with some related materials from our own collections.  Time also published some 'surprising facts' about the Erie Canal that are fun to read.  You can also visit the Canal Society of New York State online collections via the New York Heritage site.

As a bonus, we've also collected some children's books related to the Erie Canal and are displaying them near the children's room.
